Language of Plants

Though imperceptible to the human ear, plants emit sounds when undergoing physiological processes. These “voices” differ based on species, anatomy and habitat, changing over a day, week, month, year. The Language of Plants is an immersive installation that provides a complete acoustic encounter to illuminate the nuances and complexities of the landscape through the voices of its vegetative community.

The installation features the black oak savannah, which once covered the lands where the gallery now stands.Through an interactive DJ station, visitors can listen to the ultrasonic voices of 8 key species, translated to frequencies audible to the human ear and sped up so 24 hours are compressed within a 3-minute loop. Visitors can listen to individual plants, suggested mixes, or create custom mixes.

The sound station is set within a site-specific installation where one is surrounded by the very plants that they are listening to - perennials, shrubs, and trees that are alive and in bloom around them. The impression is as if a chunk of the black oak savannah has been transported to the gallery, but one’s experience and relation to the landscape has shifted as they’ve opened a door into the secret lives of plants.
